Last weekend when the weather was quite warm and nice. We had lunch out on the deck with a smoothie to beckon spring to arrive soon. We are trying to get our butts back in shape a bit and have been going for weekend runs with Alder and Tsuga. It is not always easy to muster the energy when it is cold and the days are short, but we are always glad we did.

From Splits to Parts
Due to the brace wear, Alder is used to having his legs straight and his heels flexed. While the brace may be delaying his mobility a bit (something we are not concerned about) it has made him quite a flexible fellow when he wants to reach something out in front of him...he regularly does full splits as seen in the third picture.

Jason spent the entire day with Alder yesterday as I was gone on a Sat field trip with my bird class to the eastern shore. It was a a great trip and Jason handled his first full day alone with Alder very well. I wasn't worried one bit. Here are a couple of photos from their play time and their discussions of the week's news:
Whatever, back to my multitasking ...

And to end with an adorable shot...every time we get him out of the bath, Alder grabs the brush and styles his lengthening bangs into a side part. His board-straight hair never keeps this style, but it is pretty darn cute while it lasts.

Hey you all,
in response to your leggy seedlings comment:
The light exposure is as far as I know the key to preventing leggy seedlings. Both intensity and duration matter. The fan may make root systems stronger but when they stretch they are generally searching for light. We do have a "plant" bulb that we set the seedlings under (4 inches above them) on very cold or rainy days or prior to daylight and after sunset (but they do need a "night-time". It helps to set their biological clock). The plant light is far inferior to setting them outside in the sun every opportunity possible (although then you have to prevent drying out when in the sun). The fan, or at least some air movement also prevents "damp-off" which decimated my first seedling experiment. It is a soil issue that arises from damp stale conditions. Anyway, we should talk about it some more. I would love to hear more about what you all are growing. We are just experimenting but learn something new every time. The only factor I am not controlling very well is temperature. Germination would do better if they remained warmer in the house.
Talk to you soon,
Daniel
One more thought: Remember that the leggy issue is fixed when transitioning into the soil. You can plant seedlings deep so that that long stem is set in the ground and just the top leaves show. In fact it is best so that the new plant isn't blown around.
Ok, sorry to clog the comment box.

Look at this little guy's reach! Can you help Sylvie learn some core strength for the lean and grab?? Can't wait to see you all soon for the big shin dig. (I love getting to read about seedling growth while leaving a comment!)
