Alder went in for his second round of casts yesterday and he was not happy about it. The doctor said that this one was the worst b/c they are pulling his feet in a very new position such that he will be sore for a day. He was fussy last night, but seems to be doing much better today. He is napping now and we plan to go out on the town for lunch with Granna and Elizabeth later today. It was very hard for me to watch him scream as they casted him - it is an overwhleming, uncontrollable feeling that is so new for me. It may be a bit of post-partum emotion mixed in with simply being a mother and wanting to protect her baby. He is being much tougher than me in so many ways which helps me to be more positive.

Here he is after the first casts were removed. the purpose of the first casts were to flatten his overly-arched feet, and the remainder turn the feet to the correct position.
Here he is getting his new casts...not happy. This is the only time he is allowed to use a pacifier....it doesn't seem to be working.
Jason and I have been committed to using cloth diapers with Alder and anticipated some trouble with the thigh-high casts. We were nervous about getting them soiled, but after a week of trial and error with cloth and disposables, we are certain that the cloth leaks no more than the disposables. A new friend of ours with a new baby has been super about sharing ideas and samples of different kinds of diapers. She told us about flat fold diapers that you can buy at Babies R Us that are more trim than the prefolds. We are very happy to be having success with this. Jason hung a new clothes line in the back yard to make drying them easier. He is so handy!

This morning it was beautiful and cool outside. We got bundled up and had breakfast out on the deck before Jason went to work.

he is sooooo beautiful. i think of you and all the things i have always appreciated in you and those things that have inspired and motivated me...Alder is bound to be fascinating for you will be not only an amazing mom but a wonderful role model. i wish you centeredness (if that is a word), strength and support as you help Alder grow in these first few months. sounds like you experienced a real emotional challenge kinda early. maya was hospitalized last fall and we had to pin her down for an IV insertion and it was the most bruttle experience in my life thus far. if you are at all feeling overwhelmed and shakey, know that YOUR calm and love is his peace and security. but by all means breaking down from time to time is A MUST!...for the small things and the big things...it will keep you sane in the next few months. i am sure jen is a huge support in this area. lots of love and thanks for the update.
